So, what kind of skin do you have?

This might seem like one of the oddest questions to ask. The skin is, after all, an organ. To ask what kind of skin do you have would be akin to asking what kind of heart, lungs and kidneys do you have. In truth, the skin is the same from person to person in a general biological sense.

However, because the skin is exposed externally to the environment it can end up taking on different characteristics. The fact that people have different genetics also adds to certain differences. That means different people can have different types of skin.

Questions may be brought forth regarding how to identify what kind of skin do you have. You can answer these questions relatively easily as long as you know the different descriptive categories of your skin. The way to do this would be to examine certain factors that define your skin.

There Are Five Categories of Skin Types

Five basic skin types exist and once you can identify them, you will be able to more effectively determine which one fits your category the best.

Normal Skin

You could call normal skin “generic” skin since it does not present any traits that would single it out as being different. Normal skin is neither dry nor oily and is free of any traits – positive or negative — that would make it appear different.

Generally, no special treatments are required to care for normal skin other than traditional good hygiene. Those that do not properly care for their skin will soon discover it will embody numerous problems most would preferably avoid.

Dry Skin

Those that suffer from the condition of dry skin will go to many lengths to have it treated. The reason is dry skin can flake, peel, crack, and show signs of premature aging. This is why there are so many different products on the market that claim the ability to address and reverse dry skin.

So, what is dry skin exactly?

Basically, it is dehydrated skin that lacks oils and water required for the skin to appear fully healthy. When your skin is excessively dry, it is definitely wise to add topical moisturizers that can help eliminate the dryness of the skin.

Oily Skin

Oily skin along with dry skin would be the most common skin type people deal with. If your skin is greasy, thick and somewhat shiny then it is probably oily skin. When you can actually feel the oils on the surface of the skin you would be getting the best indication of the skin type you have.

There are quite a few problems with oily skin. First, the pores of the skin can become enlarged and end up being distractingly visible. Additionally, oily skin can lead to the presence of acne on the skin which is most definitely not appealing.

Combination Skin

As you probably would correctly guess from the description, combination skin will embody traits associated with both dry and oil skin. Generally, the forehead and the nose will be oily and the rest of the face will be completely dry.

As such, there may be a need to employ two different treatment methods to deal with the oily skin and the dry skin. This might be a little involved to deal with but the right effort can definitely ensure the skin is always treated in the appropriate manner.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can be among the most difficult skin to deal with since it reacts excessively and negatively even to minor stimulus. Skin that becomes reddish and inflamed by even the slightest abrasion would be deemed sensitive skin. Sensitive skin can also be scaly and very itching making it even more annoying to deal with.

Treating Skin

No matter what skin type you may have there are products that can be used to treat it. Through applying the proper topical treatments, you will discover the negative aspects of certain types of skin can be addressed.
